Improvements to wireless provision

You told us

In the last CSD survey you asked for better wireless coverage on campus.

What we did

Wireless coverage has been improved so that students can connect mobiles and laptops more reliably. Coverage on campus has been widened and signals have been strengthened. Further enhancements are planned for next year.

Have your say

What has your experience been of the wireless service on campus? Where do you think improvements are needed?

Thanks for your comment. We’re aware of the difficulties with some mobile phones and unfortunately part of the problem is the number of different versions and little consistency between handsets on the market.
There is information about manual set-up for a wide range of devices on the CSD website and the team is currently working to revise the instructions for the Windows 8 and new Blackberry handsets.

Why do some parts of the university not have wifi at all? Some buildings, although not technically on campus, don’t have wifi at all and the signal to use 3G on mobiles can be dodgy. Surely being a university building should entitle it to wifi access?

Thanks for your comment, Jay. The wireless improvements are continuing to take place and should be completed over two years. All public and group areas now have wireless access, and we’re now working our way through the remaining University buildings. There are a small number of older buildings which pose complications in terms of extending the wireless provision, but this will be addressed as part of the wider renovation of those spaces being considered.
