University in Top 100 most gay-friendly employers

Equality

The University has been named in the Stonewall Top 100 of the UK’s most gay-friendly employers for the second year running.

The University is ranked 57th overall, coming 4th in the Higher Education Sector and 2nd in the Russell Group.

The Stonewall workplace equality index reviews the University activity in a number of key areas, including employee policies; engagement with Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB)  staff and students; staff training and development; and community engagement. Points are awarded against 25 separate questions with a maximum possible score of 200.

Liverpool scored 162 points representing an increase from 152 in 2013.

Commenting on the news, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Kelvin Everest, Senior Diversity Champion,  said: “The improvement in the University’s ranking is a reflection of our commitment to creating a University where everyone can thrive and benefit from equality of opportunity.”

Star Performer Network

As part of the Workplace Equality Index assessment process,  Stonewall recognises ‘Star Performer Network Groups’ – employee network groups which make an invaluable contribution to the experience of LGB staff in their organisation and beyond. The LGBT Staff and Postgraduate Network was recognised as a Star Performer Network for its Flagship events programme.

Dr Alan Greaves, Chair of the LGBT Staff and Postgraduate Student Network said:“It’s good to know you work in an organisation that is so committed to workplace diversity. It makes you feel supported, accepted and respected – whoever you are and whatever you have to offer.

“Many University departments have hosted their own LGBT awareness events as part of our Flagship initiative which we are delighted has been recognised by Stonewall. Through open public  events such as film showings and our Gay History Month lectures we aim to share an understanding of gay history and culture with our colleagues and community”.

The LGBT Network was commended in the Civic Contribution category of the University’s Celebrating Success Awards 2013 for their Flagship events.

Upcoming events are:

  • Film Showing and Lecture by Elena Boschi. Saturday 1st Feb 1.30pm
  • ‘What’s the problem with LGBTQ History Month?’ Lecture by Matt Houlbrook. Wednesday 26th Feb, 5pm
