Sports clubs attract record numbers

Women's hockey

A record number of students have joined up to University sports clubs this year with 48 clubs recruiting almost 3000 members.

The most popular clubs this year are hockey (186 members), archery (174 members), badminton (148 members), men’s rugby union (147 members), lacrosse (124 members) and mountaineering (114 members).

The member numbers across campus football make it the most popular sport with the men’s and women’s teams collectively holding almost 700 members.

Stuart Wade, Sports Development Manager at the University of Liverpool said: “For lots of students sport is a major part of campus and university life. We take great pride in our teams and it is fantastic to see so many clubs attracting such large numbers of students. We’ve also seen a revival of the number of clubs with sports like Tae Kwon Do, Orienteering and Judo making a comeback in recent years.”

Sport Liverpool was founded in 2007 to offer a comprehensive sporting offer to students. It includes the Athletic Union (AU) which was founded in 1884 and was formerly a standing committee of the Guild called Athletic Club.
