Liverpool’s University Challenge team have won their first round match against the University of Sheffield with 155 points to 130.
The opening round match of the long-running quiz was aired on Monday, 1 September on BBC2 where team members Hugh Hiscock, 23, who is a French Masters student; Astrophysics student, Ben Mawdsley, 21 and Tropical Disease Biology student Jem Davis, 21; were led by Biochemistry student and captain Declan Crew, 22, to victory.
Commenting on their performance, Hugh Hiscock said: “The match went very well but it ended up being a lot closer than it should have been. We got off to a great start, then faded a little bit halfway through but rallied again towards the end. Getting the early starter questions definitely helped calm the nerves!
“The experience of arriving in the studio and facing the cameras was strange at first but once the match starts you’re concentrating so much on the questions that you almost don’t notice them. I think it helped that we’re all big fans of the show, as everything seemed familiar.”
Hugh said that a highlight for the team was meeting Jeremy Paxman who has now presented the show for 20 years.
Hugh added: “It was a very strange experience to watch ourselves on the show on Monday but overall good fun. As we were watching it, our phones were going off constantly with messages! There are also a surprising number of people who tweet about it!”
Last year’s team pulled off a stunning 295 to 40 points victory in their first round match against Keele University before being knocked out in the second round against Cardiff University.
University of Liverpool’s first round match in the 2014 series is available on the BBC’s I-Player until 8.30pm on Monday, 8 September, catch up here.
