The University has initiated disciplinary action against six medical students after offensive material was posted on the Internet.

A script for the annual ‘Smoker’ play – one of a number due to be considered by the Liverpool Medical Students’ Society (LMSS) for its 2014 production – was posted to a website, leading to complaints from students and the public and significant media coverage.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Patrick Hackett, said: “We expect our students to comply with the University’s policy on student conduct and discipline and adhere to appropriate standards of behaviour.

“We are shocked by this material – it is completely at odds with the ethos of the University and its medical school.

“The University and the Guild will continue to work together to combat sexism and sexual harassment.”

The University has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the students and is conducting a joint investigation with the Guild into the LMSS. The LMSS is unable to use University or Guild premises for social activities until the joint investigation is completed.
