Doctor, author and academic, Ghada Karmi will be speaking about her new book ‘Return: A Palestinian Memoir’ at the 2015 John Hamilton Lifelong Learning Lecture.
Having grown up in Britain following exile from Palestine in 1948, Ghada Karmi trained as a Doctor of Medicine at Bristol University, before establishing the first British-Palestine medical charity in 1972.
For the latest of her books, Ghada Karmi returns to her homeland, eager to help with the peace process and the creation of a Palestinian state. She starts work with a Palestinian Authority ministry and visits places she has not seen since her childhood.
Her family home is now occupied, and much of the West Bank militarized; and her encounters with politicians, fellow Palestinians, and Israeli soldiers force her to question what role the diaspora has in the future of the homeland and whether return is truly possible.
The lecture will take place on Thursday, 22 October 2015 at 6pm, in The Quaker Meeting House on School Lane in Liverpool.
