Nightline service launches

A new confidential phone service called Liverpool Nightline has been launched by Liverpool Guild of Students.

The new support and listening service is being run by students, for students, and allows people to call confidentially about anything which they may need help or support with.

A team of trained volunteers will be available from 8pm to 8am every night during term time.

Nightline operators are there to listen but can also provide general information such as bus timetables or numbers for taxis as well as contact information for University departments and services.

The number to call to contact Nightline is 0151 795 8100.

Guild Deputy President, Alex Ferguson, said: “Nearly two years ago, I decided to run for student officer, based on the things I thought were most concerning to students. Time and time again students’ wellbeing came up – loneliness, stress, being in a new environment – it was clear this was something students were passionate about.

“I wanted to make a difference, and finding out Liverpool was one of the only large universities not to have a Nightline, I thought this would be a good way to help. I was overwhelmed by the amount of people applying to be volunteers, and the dedication of volunteers and staff to make the service happen. I think we have developed a truly excellent service, accessible by everyone, just a phone call away.”

Luciana Berger, Liverpool Wavertree MP and Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health, said: “I am delighted that a student nightline service is being established. University can be a very daunting time.

“Students are faced with all sorts of pressure, both academic and social, and often this is against the backdrop of moving away from home and leaving family and friends. It is vital that students have somewhere to turn if they need to share their worries or concerns. This service is particularly important given that it will operate outside of the hours when more traditional forms of support are available.

“It is fantastic to see so many students getting behind this initiative, and I commend the student representatives and volunteers who are giving up their time to make this possible.”
