The University of Liverpool team has just missed out on a place in the University Challenge final after being defeated by St John’s College Oxford.
The team didn’t lose a single match on their way to the semi-finals, beating St Peter’s College Oxford in round one, Southampton University in round two, Newcastle University in the first quarter-final match and Imperial College London in the second quarter-final match.
The team is made up of captain, Robin Wainwright, studying Biological Sciences; Jenny McLoughlin who studies Biological and Medical Sciences; Law student Jack Bennett; and Medical student Ed Bretherton.
After a strong start from St John’s, Liverpool fought back to go ahead at the halfway stage, but the Oxford side quickly regained their footing, eventually building up a 100 point lead.
The final score in the tough semi-final match was Liverpool 95, St John’s College 195.
At the end of the show, host Jeremy Paxman congratulated the team on their performance in the series and offered some words of consolation: “It all depends on how the questions fall… but you’ve been a great team so far. Congratulations for getting this far.”

University Challenge airs on Monday evenings, at 8pm on BBC2.
