Moving out of your halls, flat or student house for the summer?
Leave Liverpool Tidy is a city-wide project that aims to re-use and recycle unwanted goods, reducing the amount of items that go to landfill.
Each year when students move out of their accommodation, a large amount of waste is created, much of which could be reused or recycled. Leave Liverpool Tidy is a collaborative scheme between Liverpool Guild of Students, Liverpool Students’ Union, Liverpool City Council, Councillors and Residents Groups, which aims to collect, sort and redistribute these items.
Last year over four tonnes of items were redistributed through the project.
Items which can be donated include:
- Clean bedding
- Clean and dry towels
- Non-perishable foods
- Unopened toiletries
- CDs and DVDs
- Kitchen equipment
All the clothing donated will be distributed to various charities by Merseyside Textile Forum. Items donated through Halls will be dispensed at a free shop aimed at international students who might not have brought over kitchen items. All items donated in Smithdown will be returned to the local community for those most in need.
For unwanted clothes, donation banks can be found at:
- Carnatic – top car park closest to reception in space nearest to reception building (New Lodge) and bottom car park in space closest to Rankin Hall building entrance.
- Greenbank – far left hand side of car park, space closest to bin enclosure
- Vine Court – east wing enclosure
- Crown Place – Peach Street car park
- Dover Court – bike enclosure
For other items bags will be left in Halls kitchens. The bags will be distributed from Tuesday, 26 April. You just need to fill them with unwanted items and leave them in the kitchen when you vacate the property.
Area around Smithdown Road:
Liverpool Guild of Students will be posting bags to student homes around the Garmoyle Road / Gainsborough Road areas of Smithdown in early May. All you need to do is fill these bags with unwanted items and then drop them off at the Frontline Church on Lawrence Road on Saturday, 4 June.
Liverpool Students’ Union will be handing out bags from Monday, 16 May to homes in Kensington Fields and collecting bags the following week. These will go to Kensington Fields Community Centre to sort. You can also bring bags directly to the Community Centre.
For those who live elsewhere, there will be a collection point in the Guild’s Street throughout May and June for any unwanted items.
Emma Sims, Vice President of the Guild, said: “Leave Liverpool Tidy is a really important project that’s now in its fifth year. It’s a great way for us to redistribute loads of much needed items that otherwise people might throw away. So if you’re moving house this summer and have extra kitchen items or clothing you don’t need anymore – please donate it and make a difference!”
