The Book of the Dead: Tate Exchange event

Book of the Dead

Students are invited to the latest in the series of Tate Exchange events as part of the Liverpool-Tate Partnership.

To complement Tate Liverpool’s Surrealism in Egypt Exhibition, experts from the University’s Egyptology Department and Garstang Museum led by Dr Gina Criscenzo Laycock, are bringing their own Book of the Dead activities to Tate Exchange between 4 and 10 December.

Students are invited to drop in and take a surreal journey through the Hours of the Night, where subconscious fears and dreamlike states come together in a dramatic funerary landscape. Images from papyri, captured by photographer Julia Thorne, are interpreted by Egyptology experts from the University of Liverpool, providing an insight into the beliefs of an ancient people.

Armed with a visual appreciation of the ancient Egyptian underworld and inspiration from the work of an established comic book illustrator, help us to interpret the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead by illustrating its spells.

This workshop is a collaboration between the University of Liverpool’s Garstang Museum of Archaeology, Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, photographer Julia Thorne, and comic book artist, Leigh Gallagher. For more information visit the Tate Partnership website.
