Get involved: Workshops at the VG&M with award winning artist Phoebe Cummings

Cumming’s Model for a Common Room launches Saturday, 20 January at the University’s VG&M, the first of three commissions set to take place this year, collectively entitled New Perspectives.

Cummings has been making waves in the art world; she was recently named the winner of the inaugural £10,000 Woman’s Hour Craft Prize and has been named one of Telegraph’s Rising Stars for 2018. Her exhibition at the VG&M can be viewed in a room that was formerly a Women’s Common Room and takes inspiration from its surroundings.

Students and visitors will have the opportunity to add their own perspectives to Cumming’s exhibition through a series of free interactive workshops that will either be with the artist Phoebe Cummings or local artist Louise Waller.  The sessions are between 1pm and 4pm on the following dates:

  • 3rd February – Louise
  • 24th February – Louise
  • 24th March – Louise
  • 7th April – Louise
  • 21st April – Phoebe
  • 5th May – Louise
  • 2nd June – Louise
  • 16th June – Phoebe

Information on all of these can be found on the VG&M’s website here.

Phoebe Cummings said: “When the exhibition opens there will be an unfinished column in the centre of the room that will be added to in the workshops. Visitors will be able to create a tile from a mould that I’ve created, and the tiles will be added to the column. The room itself was common room and we’re recreating that purpose; bringing people together with the idea of contributing to something as a group.”

VGM@10

New Perspectives is the highlight of the VG&M’s 10 year anniversary, and forms part of the VGM@10 programme of events taking place throughout 2018. The VG&M opened to the public in June 2008 following the restoration of the iconic Victoria Building, and played a leading role in the University’s contribution to Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Nicola Euston, Museums & Galleries Manager at The University of Liverpool, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating our 10 year anniversary with this New Perspectives exhibition, which offers members of the public a unique opportunity to view collections which have not previously been on display. 2018 is a significant year for the gallery; we’re celebrating our achievements from the past 10 years and looking forward to an exciting future.”

The New Perspectives exhibition series opens to the public on 20 January 2018 and its first commission, Model for a Common Room, runs until 23 June 2018. The VG&M is free entry and is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am until 5pm.
