Students encouraged to maximise their potential with new academic skills resources and workshops

KnowHow Centre

The University has launched a new centre and online resource for students to help develop and enhance their academic skills.

The service, called KnowHow, has been developed in response to feedback which showed that students wanted more easy-to-access learning support, academic skills development, and workshops.

KnowHow complements subject-specific academic skills support within Schools and Departments at the University and is available to all students whatever their level or area of study.

KnowHow started out as workshops in the library more than three years ago, but following increased demand has now been expanded with further events and workshops and a much greater pool of resources.

There is a new section on the student intranet and dedicated workshop space on the ground floor of the Sydney Jones Library which will give students easy access to resources as well as face-to-face advice and guidance

Resources include:

  • How to manage exam nerves
  • Best ways to revise effectively
  • Information about academic integrity
  • How to use feedback effectively
  • Effective group work
  • How to plan, create and deliver successful presentations
  • Help with critical thinking and reflection principles
  • Help with planning and writing essays
  • Learning about the fundamental skills of reading, managing and referencing your academic sources

Workshops and events will be run throughout the year to support the online information, with new dates and sessions added to the webpages and Career Hub when they become available.

Commenting on the expanded service Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Gavin Brown, said: “Studying at University is challenging, especially when you are learning a new subject and dealing with the demands of assessment deadlines and adapting to University life. KnowHow has been developed to give students easy access to really useful information, workshops and events which can help to maximise academic potential and success. We really hope you find it useful and would welcome any feedback that students have so we can continue to improve and develop the service.”
