Liverpool lights up for China Dream launch

Engineering building is lit up red

Buildings across Liverpool were lit up red last night to celebrate the launch of a major new Chinese arts season being delivered in partnership with the University.

China Dream is an eight month-long season of exhibitions, performances and events that aim to shine a light on modern Chinese culture and explore the relationship between China and the UK.

The University is the official education partner of China Dream, which is part of Liverpool’s 2018 Capital of Culture anniversary celebrations.

Running from February to October, the season is being delivered in three specially curated chapters. Chapter 1 lasts until June and features a combination of ancient discoveries against dynamic contemporary art.

PRESENCE: A Window into Chinese Contemporary Art opens to the public at St George’s Hall today and runs until 3 June. The free exhibition features work from 19 of the most exciting emerging and established artists who hail from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the diaspora.

Other Chapter 1 highlights include screenings of NOW: A dialogue on female Chinese contemporary artists at FACT (7 and 21 March) and the exhibition Snapshot to WeChat: A Migration of Identity at Open Eye Gallery (6 April – 17 June).

Also included is this year’s Chinese New Year, which includes thousands of Chinese lanterns lining city streets and a huge weekend of celebrations taking place from the 16 to 18 February.

Chapter 2 of China Dream will run from June- August and will focus on leading artists in Liverpool’s sister city of  Shanghai, ahead of the 20th anniversary of the twinning of cities in 2019.

The final chapter will run from from September – October during the Moon Festival and will celebrate the best emerging Chinese artists and musicians.
