26 students from the School of Engineering took part in the annual Formula Student event at Silverstone last week.
In an increasingly competitive field of international universities the team competed in all static and dynamic events winning the Class 2 Business Event and securing two awards; the ‘Best Smart Car’ prize sponsored by PTC and the ‘Best Improved Class 2 Competitor’ sponsored by Santander.
In the Class 2 category the team achieved 6th out of 35 competitors, 4th best UK team and top of the Russell Group. In the Class 1 category the team achieved 36th out of 82 competitors, 18th out of the UK teams and 7th out of the Russell Group.
George Utley, 2018’s Formula Student team leader, said: “The combined efforts of the team, staff, family and friends produced a car that we can all be proud of. Our car took part, and looked the part, in every dynamic event and we secured some excellent results. I couldn’t be happier with how my junior team members performed; they excelled themselves and really showed me, and Formula Student, what potential their team has for next year. The event was a big success for the University of Liverpool Motorsport.”
New features of the University of Liverpool car this year include the lightest carbon fibre chassis to date, enhanced aerodynamics, dual radiator system, side wings and enhanced driver integration.
The Silverstone event is one of the biggest educational motorsport competitions in the world attracting entrants from all over Europe and from countries such as the United States of America, Canada, Australia and India. The event takes place over 4 days, and includes design scrutineering, static tests (e.g. tilt test), and dynamic events (e.g. acceleration, braking, sprint and endurance).
